Schedule
Members of Rideau Osgoode Martial Arts are welcome to attend whatever experience- and age-appropriate classes they’d like. This applies to Karate, Kobudo, and Jiujitsu (that is, memberships means membership in the entirety of the club and members can avail themselves of all of the services we provide). Some of our members attend every class; our standard progression models are designed around an average of two classes per week.
See Upcoming Events and Classes for our day-to-day calendar; and our more general Schedule below.
Class Types
We run simultaneous classes. Members can choose the combination of classes they’d like to attend.
Our Family and Youth classes are planned around the needs of our younger members. Parents are, of course, welcome to attend.
Parents are welcome to either become members themselves and attend class with their children or watch classes from the benches and chairs at the sides of the Dojo. We do ask that you resist any urge that you may have to enter the training area to coach your child; let our instructors do this (letting the instructors take care of their charges is an important ingredient in establishing the authority of the instructor). If we need your assistance, we’ll ask.
Our Advanced and Adult classes are planned around the needs of our more experienced and mature members. These classes are intended primarily for our teenaged and adult members, but we do sometimes invite younger members based on their level of experience (we will oftentimes invite pre-teen Blue Belts to join an Advanced and Adult class).
Beginners
Beginners are always welcome. While we do periodically schedule special classes for beginners only, our usual practice is to accept beginners into a normal regularly scheduled (see below) age-appropriate class. If you’d like to attend a class, please send a note to info@rideauosgoode.ca to let us know that you’re coming so that we can plan to bring in additional instructors if required.
There is no fee to attend one or two trial classes.
Note that at Rideau Osgoode Martial Arts, we practice serious traditional Martial Arts. Our programmes do not cater to young children. We have had success with children as young as five, but experience has shown that seven is about the right age to start Karate, and a little older than that to be successful with Kobudo or Jiujitsu. Whether or not a child is ready to join our programmes really depends on the child, and the best way to find out is to drop by and try a class.
There is certainly no maximum age.
